I would like to tell the story of my wife Donna and I meeting after I was released from the Air force in 1965. I was just enjoying life and working in Longview. I had this buddy that I worked with, and we liked going fishing when off work. He said to me that he had a very pretty sister-n-law my age living and working in Houston. I said bring her up sometime and we could all go out to eat. You all have heard of blind dates I know, but boy this was hitting the jackpot. Donna came up to her sister's home one weekend and we all went out to eat and went dancing. He told me that she would be alot of fun and that she was. We had three dates during the next few months and then she envited me to come down to Houston one weekend and said she would cook me a nice steak supper. Sounded good to me,so I went to Houston one weekend and she had this big steak cooked with bake potato, corn on the cobb, and home made biscuits made from scratch. I believe that was the best meal I have ever had. You know these girls know the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.Well I was hooked! I said to her I know we haven't known each other for long, but would you like to marry me. I think she already had her bags packed. She said she would love to marry me. So I called my friend I had known all my life,Melvyn Wright who was living in Dallas. I said Melvyn,do you have a good preacher up there in Dallas that would marry me and this pretty little lady I met. He said sure Ken, bring her up next weekend. Well, her baby sister Jeri and husband Wes with Raymond and Ann Davis all drove to Dallas that next weekend and met Melvyn's pastor and he agreed to marry us.Raymond gave Donna away to me and we got married. I never did know why they were all smiling so much . We didn't tell our parents we were getting married and they were a little bit upset, but we were twenty five,so we could do as we pleased.
After we were married for several weeks, there was a noticeable difference in her cooking. Now it wasn't that bad,but it just wasn't the same as when I went to Houston. I ask about this, and she just rolled those big beautiful brown eyes at me and said Ken I'm sorry but I have a confession to make.I said what is it baby, and she said you were suppost to marry my grandmother, she did all the cooking in Houston. Now that should have been grounds for a divorce, but I loved her to much by then, and she did learn to cook just great.
For years after we were married I told her that we were not really married, that Melvyn's pastor was really just a good friend and not a preacher. We just went over to the church to play like we were getting married, after all,who ever heard of a preacher named Lively Brown. She said to me, it doen't matter now,you have been with me over seven years and you are mine. I agreed! We both knew that we are soul mates forever."God is so good!" We are a blessed people because of our Lord!
Thanks for stopping by and reading about a part of my life that has really been wonderful, and I would not have changed it for the world. Love you my friends, Ken
I spoke to a man (92yrs.young) along time ago; when I ask him how he was doing,He answered and said brother Ken,it's getting gooder and gooder every day! So true it is! Have a wonderful life my friends!
